Do you have the right insurance coverage? It is not about if you are going to be in a motor vehicle collision but WHEN. WIll you be covered and be prepared? There are a few things to call on immediately for your auto policy to make sure you have.
The first is UM and UIM - under insured coverage and uninsured coverage. If you are in an accident that is NOT your fault and the other person does not have insurance or has very limited coverage, you will be OUT OF LUCK! Yes, it is illegal for them not to have coverage, but that does not mean that anyone has to pay the bill - UNLESS - you have UM and UIM. These are very inexpensive to add to your personal policy. When you have these, your insurance company will pay for your car to be fixed and for your medical bills at no cost to you and your insurance rates will NOT go up!
Next - you want to get medical payment coverage. Again, this is very inexpensive. This will pay for your medical bills whether the accident is your fault or not! What a blessing to know that if your 16 year old daughter is driving and she hits someone, her medical bills will be paid for!
Other nice things to have - car rental coverage. When the person hits you, it takes days to weeks to even months for the other party to accept fault. In the mean time you are stuck without a car and no way to get around. With rental coverage your policy will get you a car and then they will get reimbursed from the other insurance company later.
